David_Underdown Posted 12 November , 2011 Posted 12 November , 2011 The M prefix on an ASC number usually implies a connection with motor transport
ss002d6252 Posted 12 November , 2011 Posted 12 November , 2011 He has service records on ancestry - http://search.ancest...rc=&pid=1376195 On 3 July 1915 he was transferred to the ASC and then retained under the Military Service Act 1916 (his previous period of enlistment would have expired and then he then became liable for conscription). He undertook a course in motoring so I'd agree with him being a driver.
ss002d6252 Posted 12 November , 2011 Posted 12 November , 2011 In 1906 he was found to have fraudulently enlisted in 1905 and although he was retained in the army he had forfeited the period of service prior to that date in respect of pensions/continuity of service etc.
Steven Broomfield Posted 13 November , 2011 Posted 13 November , 2011 Interestingly, he seems not to appear in the Nominal Roll of those departing for France with the 11th Hussars in August 1914, printed as an Appendix to Lumley's History of the 11th Hussars in the GW. That said, there is a note that 48 Corporals and Privates constituted the Base Details, so I suppose it's possible he was one of those un-named heroes.
