waldo Posted 11 November , 2011 Share Posted 11 November , 2011 Greetings. I'm studying the attacks of the Russian 4th & 5th Armies in Poland in August 1914. I find the following: 4th Army: Four cavalry divisions have 12 guns - 36 short of full strength XIV Corps has 84 guns - 48 short of full strength XVI Corps has 96 guns - 12 short of full strength The Polish offensive was launched at the behest of Russia's allies in the West before the Russian armies were fully ready. Does anyone know what artillery batteries were missing? Thanks, Waldo Here's the above units at full strengthAt full strength: 13th Cavalry Division 13th Horse Artillery Battalion: 12 guns :26th Horse Artillery Battery 27th Horse Artillery Battery 14th Cavalry Division 12th Horse Artillery Battalion: 12 guns 21st horse Artillery battery 23rd horse Artillery battery Ural Cossack Division 7th Don Cossack Artillery Battalion: 12 guns 14th Don Cossack battery 15th Don Cossack battery 3rd Don Cossack Division 4th Don Cossack Artillery Battalion: 12 guns 8th Don Cossack battery 9th Don Cossack battery XIV Corps Full strength: 132 guns, but only 84 guns were present 18th Artillery Brigade 48 guns 45th Artillery Brigade 48 guns 2d Rifle Artillery Battalion 24 guns 14th Mortar Artillery Battalion 12 guns XVI Corps Full strength: 108 guns, but only 96 guns were present 41st Artillery Brigade 48 guns 47th Artillery Brigade 48 guns 16th Mortar Artillery Battalion 12 guns
jwsleser Posted 14 November , 2011 Share Posted 14 November , 2011 Waldo I am not sure what information you are using. What is your source that the armies were short guns? Jeff
waldo Posted 17 November , 2011 Author Share Posted 17 November , 2011 Jeff, The source for my information is Белой А. Галицийская битва (Beloy, A., Battle of Galicia). It's online here: http://www.grwar.ru/library/Beloy-Galicia/index.html?PHPSESSID=82f98af05ddcf4f3d298d9714bb878dd I think I have resolved the issue. The source text reads "462" guns while the map accompanying the source reads "426" guns. The latter figure is more consistent with what the army would have had at full strength. The XIV Corps guns figure of 84 apparently does not include the 45th ID divisional artillery (the division was not part of the corps in peacetime) but does include the extra howitzer battalion allocated to the army but attached to the 45th Division (26th Mortar Artillery Battalion) when XIV Corps was transferred to 9th Army. I'm working on an OOB for the SW Front at war beginning. I could post my work here for constructive criticism. Would that be acceptable? Waldo Waldo I am not sure what information you are using. 5th Horseman Posted 18 December , 2011 Share Posted 18 December , 2011 Waldo, I bet you have seen this, but I will post it for those that haven't and may be interested in the Southwest Front OOB. http://www.grwar.ru/library/Beloy-Galicia/BG_016.html Scott
