Good Morning

I have purchased a lovely ww1 pocket watch and inside it bears the inscription "Wm C Giles from his dear boy Willie killed at Paschendael Ridge Oct 10th 1917"

I would like to try and find out about this young man. I have tried genes (checked their war records and put out a research query to 2 people studying the name Giles) and also Ancestry

I cannot find any William Giles who died on the 10th but I found 1 William Giles who died on the 12th Oct and another William C Giles who was in the South Staff Reg 11th battalion who also died on the 12th. I have tried variables in names and also looked for a William C rather than just a william ( thinknig that William C Giles senior might have gave his son the same middle name)

Is it possible that he did die on the 10th (I cant see his father getting that date wrong) but his death was not recorded until the 12th? or does anyone have any info on a Willam Giles whoactually did die on the 10th Oct?

Thanks

Karen

Hi Karen

Here is a list from CWGC - http://www.cwgc.org/search/SearchResults.aspx?surname=giles&initials=w&war=1&yearfrom=1917&yearto=1917&force=Army&nationality=6&send.x=34&send.y=13

Only the 2 that are close- the two you picked.

Given you have Wm C Giles, I would suggest it was the second one, the lieutenant.

Given that both have no grave, the date may not be totally accurate, I would think.

His service records are at National Archives, so they might give a better answer, but which one?-
