Hello folks, could anybody help in researching a soldier from the 12th Manchesters, his name is John Blackboard Hanby, regimental number 53925, formerly 54610 West Yorkshire Regt.

John was killed on the 22nd october 1918, he was born in Shoton, County Durham. I have obtained a copy of his MIC and a copy of from the cwg. I am researching John for a friend of mine, his great nephew.

I was lucky enough to obtain Johns medals from ebay, which has started this little project.

Any info would be gratefully appreciated, thanks very much Kevin

Your reference to a previous unit, West Yorkshire, seems to have been a pre-action one as it doesn't feature on this soldier's Medal Index Card.So we can take it that all his war actions were with the Manchester Regiment. His time with 12 Battalion may have been his only unit, you would need to check what is shown on the original Medal Roll, just in case he moved units for some reason. The origianl Medal Roll,at Kew,in WO329/1572 page 9051 will show that information.

Your subject's action at the time of his death was in the Battle of the Selle (17-25 Oct 1918) 12 Manchesters were with 52 Brigade of 17 Division. To get an account of this action you could Google "Battle of the Selle 1918" and get a choice of story. There is also the War Diary for the period under WO95/2012.
