Guest robert white19 Posted 10 November , 2011 Posted 10 November , 2011 I have this old family photograph and I am trying to identify the soldier. Can anybody tell me which unit this man may have been serving in, I cannot find a regimental cap badge which matches the one he is wearing.
Pavster1980 Posted 10 November , 2011 Posted 10 November , 2011 Hello Robert Is it the Royal Marines? Rich
dannyhill86 Posted 10 November , 2011 Posted 10 November , 2011 Royal Marines would fit but it looks like the wreath is open at the top without a crown? I'm sure someone will tell you in a minute!
CROONAERT Posted 10 November , 2011 Posted 10 November , 2011 Royal Marines would fit but it looks like the wreath is open at the top without a crown? I'm sure someone will tell you in a minute! Lion and crown only 'closed' the wreath after 1923. Pre-1923 RM badge was as depicted on the photo.
Guest robert white19 Posted 11 November , 2011 Posted 11 November , 2011 Hi Rich, After posting this I found a few threads about this cap badge which said this unit was the Royal Marine Engineers (RME) which apparently used the RM collar badge as a cap badge. This seems most likely since most of the male members of this family were involved with heavy engineering. Thank you all this gives me a better chance of identifying who he is. Robert
