My first post

Have just started some research on my great uncle Henry Parfitt - 18262 - from Lyneham Wiltshire.

Information so far-

KIA Beaumont Hamel , Battle of the Somme, July 7th 1916 - 1st Btn Wiltshire Regiment.

His brother Frederick perished at Gallipoli 11 months earlier.

Can anyone point me the direction of further information about the action which took place on July 7th. ?

Thank you

Welcome to the forum.

I think your relatives number was 18282, not 18262. Soldiers who Died in the Great War have him as follows:

Birth Place:Lyneham, Wilts

Residence:Lyneham, Wilts

Death Date:7 Jul 1916

Death Location:France & Flanders

Enlistment Location:Devizes, Wilts

Rank:Private

Regiment:Duke of Edinburgh's (Wiltshire Regiment)

Battalion:1st Battalion

Number:18282

Type of Casualty:Killed in action

Theatre of War:Western European Theatre

His Medal Index Card on Ancestry shows that he was awarded the 1915 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal and that he went to France/Flanders on the 18th May 1915.

Couple of books may help (both by me): "The Great War Diaries of Brigadier Alexander Johnston " - has quite a long section on the 7th July and the 1/Wiltshire. Also, as background to the 1/Wilts and their war diary, "The 1st Battalion the Wiltshire Regiment in the Great War" (obtainable from the Wardrobe.) Please excuse my shameless publicity, but the proceeds from these books goes to the Worcestershire and Wiltshire Regt Museum Trusts respectively.

Thanks to you all for your prompt replies to my enquiry about my great uncle Henry.

Clearly this forum is a mine of information!

I will assess what I have discovered and I am sure I will be back.

I have just purchased Edwin's book on 1/Wilts from the Wardrobe at Salisbury. It will be a great asset to me.

Thank-you Edwin.
