Peter and Ellen Posted 4 November , 2011 Share Posted 4 November , 2011 Have noted that the brick fence on the north side of this Cemetery has recently been dismantled and that a Contractor is currently constructing a wire fence both in its place and also dividing, what appears to be the French graves and the Commonwealth Graves, in the Extension section of the Cemetery. Will keep you updated but will not be back in France until April 2012. Regards, Peter
River97 Posted 4 November , 2011 Share Posted 4 November , 2011 I can understand replacing the brick fence along the boundary to the field. (To be honest the green 'pool fence' doesn't seem that bad). I don't really get the separation of war graves though. Different nationality, yes, but that shouldn't be the basis for a fence. Peter, is there a gate between them? Cheers Andy.
Peter and Ellen Posted 4 November , 2011 Author Share Posted 4 November , 2011 Hi Andy, They were working along the section between the French and the Commonwealth graves when I was there, so, a gate may have come later...but it did not look as though there was going to be one. River97 Posted 5 November , 2011 Share Posted 5 November , 2011 Peter, Ae they other CWGC headstones with the French or are they German? Cheers Andy.
Peter and Ellen Posted 5 November , 2011 Author Share Posted 5 November , 2011 Andy, Yes, there are 46 British graves between the Communal Cemetery graves and the French graves, then comes the fence, then comes the Extension (the larger part) of the cemetery. See this website and you will note that there are the graves in the Communal section and then also in an Extension. http://ww1cemeteries.com/ww1frenchcemeteries/index_w.htm I am not sure of what they are doing. It appears as though they are fencing off the Extension leaving the 46 graves and the French graves outside the new fence sections.
