I have managed to MIC and Service Records for my Grandfather Pte Charles Albert Arnold. Can anyone offer any assistance with where he may have served from the attached images? As I cannot see an attachment to any Battalion could it be that he served at a hospital in Rouen?

Any assistance or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I agree Rich, but I can't find any references for 4/1st East Anglian Field Ambulance. I was hoping that the knowledable pals on the forum might be able to shed their wisdom on this set of records.

My grandfather later abandoned his wife and 2 young daughters and I really wanted to try and find out what he may have experienced during the war.

He enlisted in the TF on 28th November 1915 and was posted to the 1st Eastern General Hospital at Cambridge.According to the records he suffered from flat feet and one of the forms you posted indicates he was employed as a 'Clerk (4th rate Corps ?)' . Although drafted with the 1/4th EAFA the record states he joined the Cyclist's Base Depot on joining the BEF.

Just a suggestion I don't know but imagine 1/4th [or 4th rate] was non operational or a reserve unit in much the same way as other TF units i.e. 1/1; 1/2 etc.It was not unusual for drafts to be split up on arrival in France. The cyclists would also have been TF units.

There is a manuscript note above the entry showing he was (Processed) at Etaples on his return from leave that looks like 'rejoined cyclists '2.2.18' which seems to indicate he spent the war there. He remained in the RAMC for administrative purposes but seems to have been employed on more general duties at Rouen perhaps processing casualties?Ken

Hi Ken,

Many thanks for your input. I don't know anything about the role of the Cyclists so I will have to do a bit more research.

I have found him on the 1911 Census and his occupation is listed as a Drapers Clerk. So it would seem he had some experience of clerical duties.
