Hello,

Could anyone tell me,

Who manned Essex Farm Advanced Dessing Station during October 1917,

and whether the Admission and Discharge records are available at The National Archives?

Thank you

ADS at Essex Farm (Boezinghe) is shown in the CWGC site as ceasing to be in Aug 1917. There were however, four soldiers buried there in Oct 1917,three from the 6 Welsh and one from the 16 R Welsh Fus.They may or may not have died of wounds, and there may have been others who were moved up the chain for treatment and survived. Taking the units through to the Division and thus the Field Ambulances (who I understand provided the ADSs) for those Divisions there would be six to choose from,1 Division had 1,2 and 142. 38 Division had 129,130 and 131. Surviving casualties could also have been from other Divisions,so added FAs come into the equation. If you read the War Diaries for these units you wouldn't necessarily get any names of casualties who died of wounds or otherwise whilst under their care, and unless you can tie down a CCS who may have treated soldiers nearby there is also the long shot that they might be included in the Admission and Discharge Registers for those very few CCS whose records have survived.

You may need to amplify your information if there is any hope of help in the matter.

I have volume one of 'The Lead Swinger'. The Bivouac Journal of the 1/3 West Riding Field Ambulance. This was put together by the members of that FA during the hostilities. It is a bound volume of the first 6 pamphlets which takes them up to Christmas of 1915. It is not really a journal, as I understand it, but a collection of stories, poems, cartoons and tongue in cheek observations of their life. It contains several mentions of ESSEX FARM so I presume you could surmise that they were among the people that manned that ADS in 1915. I don't know whether they were still there in October 1917.
