crodgers Posted 24 October , 2011 Share Posted 24 October , 2011 Good morning everybody I am hoping someone can fill in some gaps I have regarding the services of Lieutenant Harold James Levander of the 3rd Kings Own Hussars. I have quite a bit of information pre war and post war but his war service is a bit sketchy. I have his medal card and a few entries from the London gazette but they seem to be all over the place. It medal card states he entered the war in France on the 24 January 1916 but from what I can gather from the LG reference is that he joined up in 1914. The medal card also has him moved back to the Reseve Regiment of Cavalry but not sure when or why. So I was hoping someone can fill in some gaps for me. I know there is a few books on the 3rd Kings Own Hussars but no library near me has them and I didn't want to buy them untill I know they are of assistance. He survived the war got married had a son who was subsequently killed in action durring the Second World War at Cassino in Italy on the 12 May 1944. Any assistance would be greatfully received. Thanks Cam
ss002d6252 Posted 25 October , 2011 Share Posted 25 October , 2011 He was appointed a Temp 2nd Lt in the 9th Cavalry Reserve Regiment from 5 Sep 1914 and a full 2nd Lt on 17 July 1917 with the Hussars. The appointment as a 2nd Lt may indicate he had prior service. When he went overseas on 24 January 1916 he was already with the 3rd Hussars so he must have transferred sometime between 5 Sep 1914 and sent part of a draft to the 3rd (they had went to France in August 1914). Whilst with the 3rd Hussars he was made a full 2nd Lt and then a full Lt before being transferred back to a reserve casualty regiment whilst still in France. sotonmate Posted 25 October , 2011 Share Posted 25 October , 2011 Cam The absence of any service record ref for any LEVANDER in the two NA series for officers,WO339 and WO374,may indicate that he served beyond 1922,and thus his record may not yet be in the public domain. Old Owl Posted 25 October , 2011 Share Posted 25 October , 2011 In the Feb 1919 Army list he is shown under 3rd Hussars(S.R.) and 2nd R.R.of Cavalry. He is not in the May 1924 Army list.
crodgers Posted 26 October , 2011 Author Share Posted 26 October , 2011 G'day everyone, Thanks for your replies. I am glad other people are having a spot of bother locating the comings and goings of Lieutenant Levander. I presume he would have been transferred around as unmountedf infantry/cav...I think I found something somewhere that said he reup'd around 1920/1921....but not sure. Once I have finished researching Harold I will post my findings. If anybody can think of anywhere else I can look please let me know Thanks again Cam
SteveE Posted 26 October , 2011 Share Posted 26 October , 2011 Cam You may have these already but here are the London Gazette entries I've found for him.... London Gazette #28894, 8th September 1914, Page 7098REGULAR FORCES. The undermentioned to be temporary Second Lieutenants. Dated 9th September; 1914. GENERAL LIST. CAVALRY. Harold James Lavender. London Gazette #28932, 9th October 1914, Page 8045 Amendments. Under Cavalry in the Gazette of the 8th September, 1914, for Harold James Lavender, read Harold James Levander. London Gazette #28962, 3rd November 1914, Page 8990 General List. The name of temporary Second Lieutenant Harold James Levander is as now described, and not as stated in the Gazette of 8th September, 1914. London Gazette #29161, 13th May 1915, Page 4634 9th Reserve Regiment. The appointment of the undermentioned temporary Second Lieutenants is antedated as follows: — Harold J. Levander to the 5th September, 1914. London Gazette #29399, 11th December 1915, Page 12407 9th Reserve Regiment. The undermentioned to be temporary Lieutenants whilst serving with Reserve Regiments of Cavalry : — Dated 2nd December, 1915. Second Lieutenant C. R. P. London Gazette #29723, 25th August 1916, Page 8399 CAVALRY. Res. Regts. Temp. 2nd Lt. H. J. Levander is transfd. to the Gen. List for duty with Army Sig. Serv. 14th July 1916. London Gazette #30185, 16th July 1917, Page 7109 CAVALRY. Hrs. Temp. 2nd Lt. Harold James Levander, from Gen. List, to be 2nd Lt. 17th July 1917, with seniority from 5th Sept. 1914. London Gazette #30582, 18th March 1918, Page 3403 CAVALRY. Hrs. The undermentioned 2nd Lts. to be Lts. 1st July 1917. H. J. Levander. Additionally his entry in the WO338 Index to Officer's Long Number Service Papers shows him as "9 Cav. R & 3/Hsrs.", it also has a P prefixed number indicating that he had additional service after the war and that his records are still (hopefully) with the MOD.
