Chiad Fhear Posted 23 October , 2011 Share Posted 23 October , 2011 Hi Guys Some help please ... Alexander Couper - or John Alexander as he was born and registered - was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal in WW1. (See notes below and the attachment.) John first enlisted as 2503 Private, 7th Argyll and Southern Highlanders (Territorial Reserve) on 25 Sep 1914 and served with them until 2 Jul 1915 at which time he transferred to the Royal Horse and Royal Field Artillery at Woolwich, as a Gunner, on 3 Jul 1915. He was immediately promoted to Fitter Staff Sergeant for training personnel at the Ordnance College. His service in the UK continued until 9 Sep 1915 at which time he was posted to join the British Expeditionary Force in France. He was wounded in action on 26 Jun 1916 with gunshot wounds to his left buttock. He was returned to the UK from 3 Jul 1916 until 14 Nov 1916 and was then returned to France. This period of overseas service continued until 2 Aug 1917 after which he was again returned to the UK in Aug 1917 suffering from gunshot wounds to his right knee, chest and neck and admitted to 54 London General Hospital. From 20 May 1918 until 1 Apr 1919 he again served in France following which he was posted to Germany and remained there until 14 Mar 1920 when he was returned to the UK to HQ 50 Brigade R.F.A. at Blackheath where he was granted an extension of service until demobilzed on 11 Apr 1920 Can anyone point me it the direction of where I could find out why? ss002d6252 Posted 23 October , 2011 Share Posted 23 October , 2011 These MSM's appear to be for general service rather than a specific act. London Gazette http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/31370/pages/6867
Chiad Fhear Posted 23 October , 2011 Author Share Posted 23 October , 2011 Thanks ss002d6252 I wasn't sure if the LG carried MSM awards. I'll check the Edinburgh one as well. Chiad Fhear
