ander11 Posted 16 October , 2011 Share Posted 16 October , 2011 Hello All, I am Looking for information on a steamer used on the river Tigris in 1916, as my Great Granfathers Battalion used this ship to cross over from the right Bank of the Tigris to the left Bank. This was taken from the Battalion war diary :- ( 12th June 1916. The Battalion paraded at 4-30a.m, then marched to the river bank, near the depot, ready to embark on T31. Tea had been prepared in the depot and was issued to the men, while fatigue parties were loading the boat. After the Battn had embarked, a delay of 2 hours ensued, as the steamer had become fast in the mud and refused to move under her own power. A Tug was sent to assist, and finally about 8.a.m T31 moved off .) I have tried Google but can't find much about this ship, also a picture of this ship would be very helpful. Many thanks best regards Ian
Terry_Reeves Posted 16 October , 2011 Share Posted 16 October , 2011 Ian "T" prefixed vessels on the Tigris were shallow draft up-river tugs so I wonder if the war diarist has got the two vessels mixed up. Wrecktec Posted 16 October , 2011 Share Posted 16 October , 2011 Hello Ian There were 46 of these vessels built and the T was for 'Tunnel-Tugs' a Sumana Type vessel that had a three foot draught for shallow water, with two screws and two 2-cylinder compound steam engines run on coal. They were between 60 and 90 tons in weight. Unfortunateky T 31 is not listed so I cannot tell you her name or much more about it.
