Janet Butler Posted 13 October , 2011 Share Posted 13 October , 2011 Hi all, Please help. I have come across a reference in an Australian magazine style record (not official) to 'our quartermaster, F M Upton'. I know all those in the know are probably rolling around laughing by now, but I did check the quartermaster's name (not Upton). Then it dawned on me. Does anyone know if this was a slang name used in the Great War? Kind regards and many thanks Janet
Tyrim Posted 13 October , 2011 Share Posted 13 October , 2011 Janet, Upton is a legitimate last name. There was a Camp Upton at Yaphank (believe it or not) Long Island, New York that served the US Army in WWI and WWII. It was named after a Civil War General according to Wikepedia. tyrim

I checked all the rolls, though, and there is no-one with that particular combination of initials and name serving. Knowing Australian humour (and possibly British), it made me wonder. Tyrim Posted 13 October , 2011 Share Posted 13 October , 2011 Janet, Hmmm. Are you saying then that in spite of it being a legitimate last name you still think that someone is UP TO N o good? with uncalled for punisment, tyrim

Janet Butler Posted 26 October , 2011 Author Share Posted 26 October , 2011 Hi Andrew, Apologies: no disrespect was ever intended to your name ( and of course not to your grandmother). It is a puzzle though. I found the reference in a magazine that did contain humour, and it clearly refers to the author as 'our quartermaster, F M Upton'. I have the quartermaster's name, and even checked the quartermaster sergeant. Neither was called Upton. There is no FM Upton serving in the AIf that I can find online, and I have also checked the F Uptons and M Uptons, in case he enlisted under only one of his names. I wanted to trace the author's family, to quote what he had written,so I would much rather he was real! i guess I will have to let it go. Apologies again - truly, no slight was intended.
