Normally a good bet is Thoday and Anstey's "4th Devons". However there is no mention of Melville Chaning-Pearce. A quick look on the Gazette shows him serving as an Adjt in the Dorsets in 1918 and relinquishing his commission from the 4th Dorsets in 1921.

The History of the Dorset Regiment shows him a Lieut leaving for India with the 4th Dorsets and then sailing for Mesopotamia from Karachi with the Bn in February 1916. It states that he eventually left the 4th Dorset to become a Political Officer.

If you can share the dates you believe he was with the 1/4th Devons I can dig some more.

Regards

Dave
