FROGSMILE Posted 27 September , 2011 Share Posted 27 September , 2011 With the help of forum members SusanHemmings, Grantowi, SteveE, and WW2 records from Australia just received, I have been able to confirm which of three Wilts Regt MICs relates to my Great Uncle and thus am able to ascertain that he enlisted at Devizes with the Wiltshire Regiment on 4 June 1914 and, after being issued a number by the 3rd (Militia) Battalion of 3/9989, was drafted to the 2nd Battalion, presumably after they returned from Gibraltar in July and in time to go with them to France. He was entitled to the usual WW1 trio of medals with the star of 1914 type, but the medals were returned presumably because he was by that time in Australia and unable to collect them. Late in 1914 the 2nd Battalion of the Wilts were, all but a few survivors, destroyed at the battle/action of Reutel (First Ypres?) and Herbert George Bennett seems very lucky to have survived. He seems to have transferred to the ASC at some point but it is unclear if this was before or after the battle. His ASC number was T/359225 and I am wondering if any expert on Service/Regimental numbers can help with a likely date when the transfer took place? He served long enough to be issued an RASC number of T/42341 in 1918 and re-enlisted in WW2 in the Royal Australian Engineers. If anyone can put dates (even approximate) to the ASC information I would be very grateful. I have tried to post the MIC here, but it is too large a file. Waggoner Posted 28 September , 2011 Share Posted 28 September , 2011 According to my information, ASC numbers issued for all trades between the formation of the New Army and the end of the war started at 1 and ended at 450200. Unfortunately there are no year dates provided. Sorry that I could not be more helpful. All the best, Gary

CROONAERT Posted 28 September , 2011 Share Posted 28 September , 2011 Garry, So a man with the number RASC number 33375 would have served during the war? Alan Regimental number T/33375 (A/Sgt Leslie Bishop, RASC) saw overseas service during the war. However, the number was also a post-war re-issue Army number for the RASC (circa 1923/24 enlistment?) Ghost Posted 1 October , 2011 Share Posted 1 October , 2011 (edited) Thanks Dave. This was probably a re-issue number then, as the man I'm looking at was P.V. Munday. Alan P.S. This number was issued on re-enlistment/transfer from RN 17/1/21, Woolwich. Alan Edited 2 February , 2023 by Ghost Update
