Hollytigs Posted 25 September , 2011 Share Posted 25 September , 2011 I think my Grandfather may have been involved in the Battle of Amiens. In his memoirs he says that he spent the summer of 1918 in the region and tells of being sent to a trench near Bucquoy and a 'late summer dawn' assualt over the top. He remembered seeing lots of men being shot down and then two Germans stationed in a hole with a machine gun. After the attack he found a bullet hold through the butt of his rifle and another stuck in his soap inside its tin soap box (which we still have). At the beginning of the summer he was in the 13th East Surreys. Do you think this could have been the Battle of Amiens? The next day he was sent to hospital in Trouville with trench fever, and then home to England where he remained until the end of the war. Thanks for your help. delta Posted 25 September , 2011 Share Posted 25 September , 2011 According to the mother site (The Long Long Trail) 13th Eaat Surreys were back in England by the start of the Battle of Amiens http://www.1914-1918.net/eastsurreys.htm That said, he could have moved to another unit. Bouquoy seems rather to far north west of Albert to have been been a sight of fighting in August. Sorry to be negative
