WW1 Defensively Armed Merchant Ships (DAMS)

Hi

I am currently researching the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) troop transports, which sailed in convoys 1 & 2 from Albany WA, at the end of 1914. I have come across 3 reliable references to at least 3 ships in the 2nd Convoy being armed, but am having difficulty in finding which ships were armed, the type of armamants, where these were fitted and who provided the gun crews - RN or RAN.

I would appreciate any assistance in tracking down sources which would assist my search.

Cheers

Amity, nothing much, but find here an award for services re D.A.M.S. So presumably RN ratings served in them.

Maybe of help. Ocean Escorts were also in some cases DAMS.

RIDDEL Alexander RD Lt.Cdr. RNR 82N109 Virginian Captain Wilding 24.05.19 Gazetted

Ocean Escorts - 01.07.17 to 11.11.18 M in D

Is a regular R.N.R. Officer, also with 4 years war service in H.M.S. Virginian. During most of this period he has been both Executive and Gunnery Oficer of the ship. He has shown marked ability in both these capacities and has also exceptional powers of organisation. He has taken very great trouble in training ratings for guns crews, in defensively armed Merchant Ships, and in personally superintending school instruction for the youger ratings.

A 'Defensively Armed' ship is one with a gun mounted on the stern. [the difference between an DAMS ship and one capable of 'offensive' ship action was that by arming the stern, the DAMS ship was expected to be sailing away from a attacker]

The gun was around the size of a 4inch but they would have used whatever was available. The crew for it would be the actual ships crew who had had a bit of training overseen by 1 or 2 proper seamen gunners drawn from service.

In saying the above, it would depend on the type of ships involved.
