Hi Mike,

According to SDGW (RAMC) 3350 Pte John Henry Plant was born in Sheffield and enlisted at Chesterfield. He is listed in the begining of the register prior to the TF, so you could assume that he was a regular soldier. Also coupled with the fact that he was attached to a regular infantry battalion and his early arrival in theatre would all strongly suggest a regular soldier.

Hope this is of use.

Regards,

Jon

I don't know enough about the numbers, but,if you had seen any War Diaries which commenced at mobilisation you would see that a fair few Reservists came into units, particularly medical ones.

Taking another peek at this to see if there is anything else which occurs.

I now interpret his unit as 2 Field Ambulance, his date of landing of 19 August 1914 ties in precisely with that FA,which set foot in Boulogne on that day. It was one of 1 Division's Med units. If you look further down the MIC you will see that the clerk doesn't put the "continental" bar across his sevens,so the unit shown is an F Amb !

Dear both

Many thanks for your comments.

Sotonmate, I think you are right, it does look like 2 Field Ambulance.

In the 1911 Census he certainly isn't in the Army, so I am thinking Reservist.

cheers

Mike
