15th July 1914

On this day the test mobilisation of the Royal Fleet Reserve began, in place of customary annual grand manoeuvres.

Also on this day, General Sir Ian Hamilton arrived back in England. As Inspector-General of Overseas Forces he had just been to visit Australia [2nd February – 24th April] where he had been impressed by a Colonel John Monash and to New Zealand, which he left on 4th June 1914.
