Guest Stoner Posted 21 March , 2003 Share Posted 21 March , 2003 Could anyone pinpoint for me the whereabouts of the 7th DCLI on this date. I'm looking into 7885 C.S.M. Charles Randolph Coventry KIA on this date, his CWGC Info lists him as holding the Military Cross? Is this possible for a WO Class 2 (from his SDGW record), I didn't think it was? Greenwoodman Posted 21 March , 2003 Share Posted 21 March , 2003 7 DCLI were with 61st Brigade, 20th (Light) Division on 24/08/16, engaged in the Battle of Delville Wood. Ray Westlake's "British Battalions on the Somme" puts them in front line trenches at Gillemont (sic - probably Guillemont), repulsing an enemy attack. Staffsyeoman Posted 21 March , 2003 Share Posted 21 March , 2003 If possible, try to get hold of a copy of "Awards of Bars to the Military Cross and Awards to Warrant Officers 1916-1919" by JV Webb. I may have mangled the title slightly, but he, as it says, lists all recipients of Bars to the MC and all WO recipients. That should give a pointer to the London Gazette. John Milner Posted 21 March , 2003 Share Posted 21 March , 2003 From History of 20th (Light) Division - The 20th relieved the 24th Division on 22 August north of the Guillemont-Montauban road, with HQ at Minden Post near Carnoy. The 59th Brigade held the right sector from the Guillemont-Montauban road, just west of Guillemont, to the station. The 61st Brigade held the trenches continuing the line to just south of the SE corner of Delville Wood. The 60th Brigade in reserve at the Craters. Guest Stoner Posted 21 March , 2003 Share Posted 21 March , 2003 Thankyou all for your replies and information, despite the complete muddle I made of the title! (It was late and beer had been involved ) but once again the "Chrisbies" came up trumps! Thanks Mark
