Remembered Today:

Kasino Point Crater

I think I have exhausted all my possible search facilities to find the location of the Kasino Point Crater. I know that it has been filled in now, but does anyone have trench co-ordinates for the sight or some other useful indicators?

Many thanks

Attached is a picture showing Casino Point in relation to Carnoy. Hope it is of some help.

The grid lines are at 250 yard intervals.

This photo shows the track that runs from Carnoy to Montauban. To the right of the tree is the old crater field that was the Carnoy craters. Talus Bois is further to the right off shot and in a valley. To the left of the track is the field that would continue to Kasino Point. Hope this gives some bearing and relevance to the map / diagram above. Whilst nothing remains now of the craters it is possible to visit (crops permitting). The Carnoy craters were still there when I first visited and my brother and I recovered a few buttons (French and British) there.

Hope this helps a little.

This is the site, photo taken in 1989, the Carnoy craters were still there then.

Bob.

The attached map is not the greatest but if you look north of Carnoy you will see Cassino Point in the top square within section 7 (this is 7.B).

Here's the site depicted by the yellow cross on a modern IGN map (i wonder whether the 'kink' in the track is due to the once existence of the crater?)...

Here is a Google earth map of the Casino Point Mine area. I was there in 2009 and you could still just see the remains of the crater, obviously filled in but still settling. Dave

Hello Dave

Thanks for the map. I went there on Tuesday - unfortunately the farmer has decided to grow maize in the field so it was not possible to find any trace at all. I will be going back in November when hopefully I will be able to 'stand on the spot'.

My apologies to Jarvo and Croonaert - I should have included my thanks when I responded to Dave (above).

  • 8 years later...

Here's a pic similar to Dave's. The circular impression of the settled ground is easy to see right beside the kink in the track.

Looks like I'm nine years late to this conversation!!! :D

Thank you, Don!!! I'll definitely be going by both these sites on my next Somme trip!!

Have a good trip.  We will be out there very soon, just a few minutes from Carnoy.

I should have been a little clearer about the "darker green".  I was referring to the series of circles in the centre of the picture, not the bit at the bottom - but I guess you knew that anyway.
