Remembered Today:

Welch Regiment

Hi all,

I am currently researching the above named soldier. I have been able to establish that he joined the Welsh Regiment in October 1918 and finished his basic training in January 1919. He then signed on for the usual 4 years.

I am hoping there is a Welsh Regiment expert out there who could tell me where he would have done his basic training and, if possible, they could let me have any period photos of the training camp.

Thanks

Hi,

Not my field, but it might be handy if you could quote his service number(s) - there are an awful lot of Evanses in Wales!

Alternatively, do you know which his training unit was (eg, 3rd Battalion; Training Reserve / Young Soldiers battalion, etc.)?

Hello,

His service number was 80277. He joined 14/10/18 and was just over 17 years of age. Not sure who he served with except it was Welch Regiment

Hi all,

I have now been able to establish that my man did his recruit training at Owestry. Does anyone know anything about this camp in or about October 1918? Are there any photos?

Oswestry usually equates with Park Hall Camp, which lay between Oswestry and Whittington. If you google this or ask for images I'm sure you'll find some! There may also be mentions if you search this Forum as well.

LST 164,

Thanks for the reply. Have googled as suggested and come across the basic history of the camp. Has anyone any images of the camp from that period they can share as they seem to be limited on the net.

Thanks

Tanks3,

if there's little response on this thread, try starting another under "Home, Camps etc." asking specifically for images and information on the camp. A thread marked "Welsh Regt." might not attract the attention of someone with a Shropshire interest!

Shropshire County Records Office in Shrewsbury might be another source.
