Remembered Today:

~ Aerial photos of the Western Front ~

Hi all

Just wondering if anyone knows where I can find WW1 aerial photos of the Western Front. I'm looking for images from sheet 28.U It covers towns such as Warneton, La Basse-Ville, Deulemont and Ploegsteert (Plug Street)

In trench map terms that's 28.SW.4 Ploegsteert

I already use McMasters map room http://library.mcmas...w1/ndx5to40.htm and have the Western Front Association 'Mapping the Front' Ypres CD ROM . A few of the images I'm after are avaiable but unfortunately a few other images I'm after aren't on these two. If anyone can recommend any other Internet sites or CD ROM's please do

Regards Wendy

P.s I have searched the GWF and found photos of other areas

The War Diary of the Australian 28th Battalion is full of pictures of square 28U from December 1917 and January 1918. You can find them on the Australain War Memorial site:

http://www.awm.gov.au/collection/records/awm4/subclass.asp?levelID=1813

The ones you want are December 1917 Appendices Part 3 (Part 4 has some useful maps of the same area) and January 1918 Appendices 13-14.

The diary of the 44th Battalion also has some in the March 1918 diary:

You little ripper :w00t: now that's what I'm looking for.

I've been and had a quick look and boy o boy I cant believe how many aerial photos are available and all smack bang where I'm wanting. Thank you so much Tim it's marvelous that you knew they were there.

It's amazing how much WW1 information is free on line from Australia. I had a look at another Australian aerial photo collection last night but it didn't turn up anything unfortantly.

I'll have a hunt through the other files also, the Kiwis were never far from the Aussies so there must be lost of other areas of interest.

Fantastic stuff ~ Thanks again, Wendy

Happy to help the war diaries are a great source of photos but you have to hunt the 28th Battalion was one of the best for keeping them. Let me know what other map references you are looking for and I'll see what Ive found.

PS what was the other site was it the National Archives? They are a good but as they are from someone associated with the mining companies I always feel they should be subtitled craters we have made.

Tim,

Are you aware of any aerial photographs of the Flers/Geuedecourt area, particularly the north end of the village and beyond generally northwards towards Factory Corner?

Great minds think alike ~ I was going to say Flers also Ken

Tim do you think there may be aerials of the Flers area, I'm thinking September 1915 the Kiwis came through the Western side of Flers and pushed through to Factory Corner

Regards Wendy

Ken dont know if these pictures are of any use to you, forum member Roger Shephard put them up for me on another topic

Thanks Wendy. I have seen a number of trench maps of the area but I have seen very few aerial photographs.

Unfortunately I've not found any photos of this area in the Australian War Diaries but up until mid 1917 when Bean started encouraging them to keep more records they often don't have anything more than the written diary. From an NZ perspective most of the pics that will be of interest will be from Sheet 28 from mid 1917 to early 1918. Having said that I do have a pic of Factory Corner which I picked up on the web somewhere I'll find it and post it up here.

Thanks for that Tim, very much appreciate all your help with this

I've spent the morning looking on the AWM site at the photos, there's some really interesting photos in the collection. I did see two photos taken up at Factory corner when I searched 'Flers' Will go back and get them if they are different to the ones your are going to locate for Ken.

Ken I found this photo of the trenches near Geuedecourt, all I've found at this point, I'll post any others I find while I'm scouting.

As promised my only pic of Factory Corner unfortunately Aerials from 1916 are not that easy to find. By the way thanks for the link to the AWM site pics Ive been wanting a picture of Sunray trench as I had a great uncle who was wounded there and hadn't seen that one before I may have to order a copy.

Well that's all marvelous, we have all found something to go on with.

I'll post some other sites that I've found aerial maps on, they may be of interest to anyone who is watching this thread or stumbles accross it.

  • 1 month later...

Just found this French site which has a lot of good photos from areas such as Verdun, the Main de Massiges and around Prouilly mainly from 1917/18. The site owner has annotated them so its easy to locate sites. Unfortunatly it is in French and the Google translate does not work on it, but its not hard to find your way around.

Tim, do you have the portion that shows factory corner to Gueudecourt itself? So to speak, northern part of the road that leads from factory corner to G.?
