Remembered Today:

CWGC

I have found that CWGC's details show the wrong age for a Lieutenant-Colonel who died in action commanding a battalion on the Somme. They show 53, but he was really 58. A family memorial in UK shows the true age and it can be cross-checked with registration of his birth and baptism.

Is it worth asking the Commission to have their entries checked and changed?

Daggers,

It certainly is. You will also need to include some evidence. They will be able to update the Debt of Honour fairly soon but the headstone may take some time.

Cheers Andy.

I have been advised by the CWGC that details on memorials and headstones will be updated the next time they are due for renewal. I had a conversation with some CWGC workers at Brookwood Cemetery last week who told me that the headstones (there at least) should last 30 years, with re-engraving of the details when required.

Cheers

Grant

Daggers,

Recently, as the result of a request from a member of Bertram Denney's family to the CWGC to change the spelling of Denny to Denney, a new headstone has been put up in Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery carrying the correct spelling of Bertram's surname. It has taken less than two years for the process from start to finish. His niece sent the CWGC copies of Uncle Bert's death certificate and of his medal index card. The Debt of Honour Register was altered immediately and arrangements were made to correct the headstone as part of the works maintenance programme. Well done the CWGC! For a full account of this story please see my article "What happened to Uncle Bert?" in the July 2010 edition of the Western Front Association's The Bulletin.

With best wishes,

David
