In a recent post, Maryhill Barracks, Glasgow was mentioned. It brought to mind a conversation I had a few years ago with a Glaswegian friend regarding the HLI and in particular the 18th (Service) Battalion, (4th Glasgow) a bantam battalion.

A tale my friend had been told with regard to the battalion – that they were marched out of the barracks to the railway station in the early hours of the morning to stop the general public seeing them, because of their size.

Has anyone heard this tale before, and is there any truth in it?
