Seany Posted 19 March , 2011 Share Posted 19 March , 2011 here is a part of a war diary for 293 SB RGA dated 6th October 1917. I can read all but the last few words ' continued work on new position ...........................' Obviously don't worry about the signature. David Porter Posted 19 March , 2011 Share Posted 19 March , 2011 I see: "Commenced work on new position about 18m yds to" This doesn't make sense - I think the "m" must be another number. Edit: (having blown it up a bit) Make that "1600 yds to"
Seany Posted 19 March , 2011 Author Share Posted 19 March , 2011 David well done, looking at the whole sentence I see it now as '1600 yards to left flank' thank you. ps - the next page of the diary is so badly written and faded with age that there may be more queries I see: "Commenced work on new position about 18m yds to" This doesn't make sense - I think the "m" must be another number. Edit: (having blown it up a bit) Make that "1600 yds to"
Ron Clifton Posted 19 March , 2011 Share Posted 19 March , 2011 Could it be "1600 yds to S"? (south) Ron
Seany Posted 19 March , 2011 Author Share Posted 19 March , 2011 Hi Ron, thanks, but 1600 yards to south left flank sounds a bit ponderous, not improbable given short hand nature of some diary entries, however the next two words not on the scan are quite clear as 'left flank' so I think David probably has it correct - Could it be "1600 yds to S"?
