Remembered Today:

Thundersley, Essex, New War Memorial

Recommended Posts

I used to live near Thundersley and I saw that a resident is campaigning for a War Memorial for the men of the District. He has collected some 60+ Names from both Wars.

I've contacted the local paper as one lad was murdered by the SS after baling out of his Lancaster on 18th March 1945. That anniversary isn't far away so the paper is looking to possibly run a story to help with the appeal. Thundersley War Memorial

Rather than start up individual topics, could I ask for resident experts to look through the draft list for any of their specialist areas of interest and add whatever extra they can?

These are the Names from CWGC using Geoffs Search Engine and Soldiers Died in the Great War, but if you know of others witha Thundersley, essex connection, please add them!

As ever, thanks in advance

There are WW1 and WW2 memorial tablets in St.Peters Church. If you send me a PM with an email address I will send the pics to you. There are a couple of names I could not verify but it would also give another angle on the names you need

Thanks very much, IPT

One puzzle emerges...

You show George Johnson from SDGW, but I can't find him as such in the CWGC Debt of Honour...

Name: George Johnson. Birth Place: Thundersley, Essex. Death Date: 26 Sep 1918. Death Location: France & Flanders.

Enlistment Location: Stratford, East London. Rank: Sergeant. Regiment: Royal Horse Artillery and Royal Field Artillery. Number: 70964.

Type of Casualty: Killed in action. Theatre of War: Western European Theatre

There is this chap, same Reg't Number, same Date of Death and same Service, but....

Name: ROBEY, CHARLES. Rank: Serjeant. Regiment/Service: Royal Field Artillery. Unit Text: "B" Bty. 117th Bde. Age: 31. Date of Death: 26/09/1918. Service No: 70964

Additional information: Son of Wilhelmina Robey, of 58, Eden Rd., Walthamstow, London, and the late George Austin Robey. Born at Leytonstone, London.

Grave/Memorial Reference: IV. A. 11. Cemetery: STE. EMILIE VALLEY CEMETERY, VILLERS-FAUCON

One born Thundersley; the "other" in Leytonstone!!

Thanks for the others, interestingly I used to work with a Bob Choppen, from Benfleet, just close by!

Johnson's MIC confirms his rank, regiment, number and date of death. Therefore, they are the wrong details for Robey, except the Robey family details which are correct, and presumably the cemetery.

There are surprisingly few MICs for Charles Robeys (4) and none of them in an artillery regiment.

A real mystery!

I have contacted the CWGC to ask them to check BOTH records as I can't see it possible for 2 different men to have so many similarities, Rank, Reg't No and Date of Death (as well as both RFA).

I'd normally choose CWGC over SDGW but Charles Robey does have Additional Information from his family, and they should have known!!

There is this chap, who hails from close by, but no apparent link with Thundersley......

Name: JOHNSON, GEORGE EDWARD. Rank: Corporal

Regiment/Service: Royal Field Artillery. Unit Text: "A" Bty. 310th Bde.

Age: 30. Date of Death: 10/10/1918. Service No: 49787

Additional information: Husband of Annie Johnson, of 50, Balmoral Rd., Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex.

Grave/Memorial Reference: XVI. D. 6. Cemetery: GREVILLERS BRITISH CEMETERY

but it doesn't explain why there is a conflict with CWGC and SDGW info

Hopefully the Southend Evening Echo may run a follow up piece for the anniversary of F/Sgt Don Hughes, who was murdered on 18th March 1945 after baling out from his Lancaster, so that may provide a few more Names or details.

Thanks to all who have pitched in so far, I'm up to 95 Names over both Wars, just need to find the "right" matches for some Smiths and Carters etc.

Thanks again, keep 'em coming!! I'd rather have possibles to "eliminate" than miss a correct chap!

004 CABLE J 8704 2ND BN 21/10/1914 ESSEX REGIMENT

He was a pre war regular - joining the Essex Regiment in 1906/07

Husband of Mrs. K. Cable, of 3, Hillside Cottage, Thundersley,

I was kindly sent a transcript of the 2nd Essex war diaries by forum pal GrandsonMichael - these are the War Diaries for 5 days in October showing the engagement that Private Cable was engaged in. 30 Essex Battalion men died on the 21st October 1914.

Private Cable has a marked grave, only one of two Essex Regiment casualties from the 21st October 1914 to have a marked graves. I believe, if I am interpreting the CWGC data correctly, there are also five memorial headstones in Strand Military Cemetery, Comines-Warneton, Belgium to five 2nd Essex Regiment men who were originally buried at Ploegsteert New Wood cemetery in 1914 but whose graves were later destroyed.

Ed: Phew! Thanks for all of that! Quick look seems to have a fairly large Cable family farming near London Road Rayleigh in 1901....

A James aged 13, perhaps our man?

IPT: Will let you know what response I get from CWGC, but not seen anything similar where two sets of records are so muxed ip!

So, help on the Carters, Hopwood and some of the inconsistencies would be appreciated..... TIA

I thought i'd cracked Hopwood when I found 10312 Frederick William Hopwood AVC of Common Lane, Thundersley. However, he was discharged in 1919 and there are no likely deaths post war on the BMD.

There is a Frederick Hopwood, aged 4, in Thundersley on the 1901 census. He is a visitor, but I can't quite work out the household set-up.

One of the casualties is the correct age, and has a mother called Mary with a different surname but that's probably pushing it even by Essex standards.

Actually, on that Census page it shows the address as Hart Road, Thundersley, so he might be our lad.... just what did he do in the Army when he grew up??

I don't see him as becoming an officer, the Rifle Brigade, RFA, KLR and N Staffs have no apparent connection with Essex, so possibly the Yorkie, Berks or Queens RWS are left....

I've contacted St Peters Church to see if they can unravel some of the inconsistencies, but still haven't heard back from the guy behind the proposal.

It'll probably need someone local to run to the newspaper archives, but I'm obviously very pleased with the progress you guys have given me.

Re William Himpett, 7th Bedfordshires.

There is a story of the battle he fell in here - http://www.bedfordregiment.org.uk/7thbn/7thbtnmarch1918.html By the end of the following day less than 200 of the Bn remained and William would have fallen along the Crozat Canal, photos and locations of which are in the story page. By the end of the battle, the entire Brigade was so small they formed a coposite battalion between them.

I also have a photo of his name on the Pozieres memorial - a larger file size id also available off forum if useful to you.

post-1637-0-20504700-1300795889.jpg

There does not seem to be a service record for him on ancestry so:

  • His Medal Card tells of prior service in the Hertfordshire Rgt but this may be a red herring as entries for the two regiments by 1917 are often used interchangeably on such general documents, especially when related to the issue of Victory / BW Medals (as is the case here).
  • The issue of the number 204480 seems to relate to January 1917 but there are many inconsistencies to numbers around that time, so perhaps use it as an indication but not a final fact!

Sorry its not much but hope it helps to some degree!

Best of luck

Steve

Steve, this is new to me, so obviously of interest.

I still await the organiser of the War Memorial to contact me, I have asked the Echo to pass on my details and I've also asked St Peters for any info, especially on the two headstones which have inconstancies in their transcription to actual casualty details. They have the draft RoH of 105 Names, which is where I'm at currently, having exhausted my "skills" on CWGC and Ancestry for Thundersley links.....

I'm only involved as I have an interest in RoH's and a quick scour turned up more than they guy said he had.

Thanks everyone for your help, if it ensures that one overlooked chap is now properly remembered, then it's worth while doing.

The file is too big to load onto here, so should anyone want to refer to it, please contact me and I can email it.

It also includes the WW2 casualties.

I did a search on the CWGC database with Thundersley as the Home Town and came up with quite a few names which aren't on your current list. I can probably export them to a spreadsheet. Where would you like me to email it?

Hi, Semele. I've used Geoff's Search Engine with Thundersley to produce those from the CWGC database, so I hopefully have them

Click on my name on the left hand side of my post and send me an email. You may need to get to 5 posts, so one response gets you to 4.

How many Names have you extracted from CWGC and I'll compare to how many I managed!

I got 25 plus a Canada and a NZ hit, part of the 58 WW1 Names.and 47 for WW2.

Appreciate the time you've taken, always good to have a double check!!

Hello again.

Sorry, yes, still getting used to all this.

I managed to extract 66 names from CWGC with Thundersley. Let me know if that matches up with your records and if not, I'll send them to you (somehow).
