bunker?

Sorry, no; and the answer is specific rather than general.

Not Forest, Not Wood, but Stone

Close to Fields - but one evening too close for comfort!

Is this a WW1 thing, or something else?

No it's WW1 - twice over! (Honest your honour)

If no winner by lunchtime, I might have to give the date and time of the particular evening.

OK, a clue, the too close for comfort was 8:10pm 18 December 1917

an aeroplane raid at london, essex and kent?

Last two attempts getting warmer, but only vaguely related to an aeroplane (unless we allow WW2 information - but that would be a red herring as arguably not operational in WW2)

"Stone" should keep you grounded.

"The round stone in the middle of the roadway marks the spot where, on 18th December 1917 at 8 - 10pm a bomb from a German aeroplane struck the ground and exploded, shattering the windows in Stone Buildings and doing other material damage".

Well done (to you and Google?), 10 Stone Buildings, depot of the Inns of Court OTC, just off Lincoln's Inn Fields.

Your turn.

I am confused. Seany appears to have given the correct answer first, but attributed the bomb to a Zeppelin, then David then said 'only vaguely related to an aeroplane' and then Sabine gave the same answer, but attributed the bomb to an aeroplane ...

Ah - the curse of cross-posting - Sorry Seany you reply came in whilst I was composing the 'only vaguely related to an aeroplane' post. Hence my "last two" references should be penultimate and pre-penultimate!

Do we let it stand or run two questions at once - I don't see a problem as long as people are clear whose question they are answering!

Sorry all - the "devils own" problem!

I think it is the Buttes - New British Cemetery and Australian Memorial at Polygon wood.

I know 7 VC's were awarded

I know a polygon can be 7 sided

I know British and Australians are buried there

there is a tenuous link somewhere to the desolation of the place left only to the goats.

Can't find a farmhouse on my maps
