Have brass shell casing ... markings are FN 1916 40 DEZ HL27, and it was definitely fired as the primer strike has firing pin mark...

I’d include a photo, but I couldn’t figure it out....

curious as to what Gun etc., etc....

I appreciate your help.!!

Sounds like a German cartridge case for the 7.7cm FK.96 field gun. Does it measure 77mm across the neck and it it 230mm long?

FN = Made by Friedrich Niemeyer

DEZ = Manufactured December 1916

40 = Batch number

HL27 = Acceptance stamp from the Hauptlaboratorium, Ingolstadt, Bavaria

Hi, Welcome to GWForum!

German, with FN being for the German munitions factory Friedrich Niemeyer; DEZ is December, so December 1916 is the manufacture date; and HL is for Haniel Luege of Düsseldorf (who made the case) with 27 being an inspector's number showing it had passed for issue. To the best of my knowledge these cases were for shells for the 7,7 cm Feldkanone 96, the Feldkanone 167,5 cm, and the Feldkanone M15. IF you provide dimensions others better knowledgeable than me can help!

Can anyone provide any information on this shell please?  It is 88 mm that I believe came from a submarine.

Particularly interested in the 16 on the top right - is that a date?

I believe that’s the cartridge case for a 8.8 cm SK L/30 naval gun. Made in February 1911 and reloaded in 1916. Their use included submarines, but they were mostly used in surface mounts.

Thanks @peregrinvs.   Do you also know what the "III X" on the top means?

I assume they indicate a reload or reloads, but I don’t know their exact meaning.
