rmcguirk Posted 12 February , 2011 Share Posted 12 February , 2011 Grateful for any information about Lt Sydney M. E. Fairman. He was originally with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Arrived Egypt 1916 (October?) and he apparently served there with the Camel Corps AND the Light Car Patrols. (He's the only soldier I know of who served in both.) In the 1920s he was with the Camel Corps of the Frontier Districts Administration (Egyptian Govt). The above info is from his MID card / Ancestry. I've also found reference to a Captain Sydney Maurice Ewart Fairman in the Supplement to the London Gazette 10 March 1944. I was not able to find him in the 1901 Census. There is no service record at the NA under WO 374, but he retired from the EF in 1923 so his record may be accessible at Army Personnel Centre Glasgow. Ex Royal Welsh Fusiliers (241511) and Hussars I should add that the first 7th Company (with the 5th Company) were raised from the Infantry of the 53rd or 54th Div (I forget one went where off hand) but due to there failure to cross over to the mounted arm were disbanded and returned to units, and a new 7th Company was reraised from the Yemanry. Its possible that some of these men fall into this area? Cheers S.B
rmcguirk Posted 13 February , 2011 Author Share Posted 13 February , 2011 Thank you, Steve, for confirming Fairman's service with the ICC. It was probably only for a few months - certainly less than a year, as he arrived Egypt towards end of 1916 and was seconded to MGC(M) the following September. I assume this secondment means he was already with the LCPs. Regards, Russell
Neill Gilhooley Posted 16 October , 2017 Share Posted 16 October , 2017 A fascinating individual... Fairman’s father, also Sydney (~1874-1962) was a Chief Clerk in the Royal Engineers and became Foreman of Works on the Nigerian Railway in 1913. Fairman (28.5.1898 - 20.5.1944) became Chief Constable of Hertfordshire and also served in the Second World War, he died in Italy of pneumonia.* He might have been in Lahore in 1921 (Freemasons records), he might have sailed Egypt-UK in 1924 (immigration record). A subaltern named Fairman (over six foot tall and more than 14 stone, so nicknamed ‘Baby’) from the Frontiers Camel Corps, helped the Kemal el Din Sahara expedition in 1923; and a man of the same name was on the Clayton expedition of 1926. Goudie speculates that this may have been Sydney Maurice Fairman** It would be great to have more information on him. * http://www.hertspastpolicing.org.uk/content/police-history/chief_constables/sidney_ewart_fairman ** Goudie, Andrew, ‘Wheels Across the Desert’, 2008
