laughton Posted 3 July , 2004 Share Posted 3 July , 2004 Interesting, as I see that Geoffrey Laughton appears from Leed Grammar School. Not my G. Laughton but the other G. Laughton in the 26th Northumberland Fusiliers (see page 209, last line, John Sheen's "Tyneside Irish"). Sadly, that G. (Geoffrey) did not make it, but our G. (George Van Wyck) of the N.F. 26th did make it through (thus I can write this message). God bless them all,
Tony Lund Posted 27 January , 2005 Share Posted 27 January , 2005 Huddersfield Old Boys Beadon, Cpt Basil Herbert E, R Welsh Fus Owen, Lt Rowland Hely, Duke of Wellington's R This tread was started before I joined. Captain Beadon lived about 100 yards from where I am sitting now, the “E” is for Edwards. Lieutenant Owen was in command of many local men who mention him in their letters home. Apparently during a charge on Hill 60 he fell dead on top of a badly wounded man, thus partially protecting the man who later surprised the doctors by first surviving and then recovering the use of his leg. Photographs do exist on microfilm at the library but the quality is terrible. I would love to see a clear image of both these men, if that is possible. Tony. Thanks in advance.
PhilB Posted 28 January , 2005 Share Posted 28 January , 2005 It`s interesting that officers predominate in almost all the clubs. One wonders how many officers would appear in a similar Rugby League Roll of Honour. Probably very few. The determination of the Rugby Union to resist professionalism, the difficulties of working men in playing rugby and the formation of the Rugby League are well described in:- http://www.rl1895.com/rugby-divide.htm Phil B
