emz82 Posted 22 January , 2011 Share Posted 22 January , 2011 Hi Everyone, I have tracked down the name of one of the guys in several of my Gt Grandfather's photographs (the chap seated in the image on this page - http://www.captainjohnson.co.uk/Contact.html) In 1902 he was L/cpl Dance and was in the shooting team of the 1st Cheshire Regiment when they were in Quetta. As I don't have a first name or birth location for him I am struggling to ID him. He looks to be a similar age to my grandfather so looking at a birth year of circa 1880, maybe slightly later. I've looked through Ancestry but not found any massively likely candidates. Any info would be greatfully received, Cheers, Emily
IPT Posted 22 January , 2011 Share Posted 22 January , 2011 No obvious candidates here; http://www.findmypast.co.uk/chelsea-pensioners-service-records-collection-search-start.action?submit=1&offset=
Blackblue Posted 22 January , 2011 Share Posted 22 January , 2011 I see your Grandfather has a badge on his forearm (crossed rifles and a star) in one of the photos Emily. This may indicate he was a champion shot. Might be worth posting as well to see if one of the badge experts here can tell you what it means? susanhemmings Posted 22 January , 2011 Share Posted 22 January , 2011 Could only find two possibles via medal rolls on ancestry: Harry Dance was KIA Frederick Dance - no apparent records. (there are records for a frederick dance in Gloucsters but the number is obviously incorrect - but he was in India in Nov 1902 - not that that is much help). Sorry, you have probably seen both these anyway..... Frederick C Dance Cheshire Regiment 15546, 244146 View Record Harry A Dance Cheshire Regiment 9193 can find no other reference to a "dance" in the cheshires from medal rolls WW1 but there are plenty of "dance" references if you look under "military campaign and award rolls" on ancestry. Again, no "dance" and "cheshire" match. sorry not to be of much help. susan
