Going on leave

The photo below, from Tommy, shows men coming home on leave and carrying rifles with FSMO. I assumed this was because they would return to possibly a different location, but it seems odd that they should bring rifles home on leave. I don`t suppose officers carried weapons or that much kit? And I don`t recall WW2 men taking rifles home. Does it seem a good idea, or military necessity? Phil B
