David_Bluestein Posted 24 June , 2004 Share Posted 24 June , 2004 Hello again Dick, Anything you might have on Capt. J.A. SAVAGE would be gratefully received! His story is actually very interesting and sad. In summary he and another officer entered into no-mans land under a German white flag of truce on Sept 18, 1914. After a brief conversation with the Germans, the two officers turned their backs and made their way home to their own trenches. It was before they reached the safety of their own lines that the Germans leveled their guns and fired at the two British Officers. Savage was killed, shot in the back; and the officer Lieut. Dimmer (who would later go on to win the VC) was not hurt. I think he was also a graduate of the RMC? Any help always welcome. Best wishes, and thanks (again!) in advance David Bluestein

David: The story of his death in Northamptonshire and the Great War is as follows: "Capt. J. A. Savage and several men of "D" Company were also victims of white flag treachery on the Aisne. They were attacking a German trench amid a torrential rain, when the enemy displayed a white flag. The Captain drew his sword and revolver and placed them on the ground. He was followed by a young subaltern of the King's Royal Rifles. When they reached the enemy's lines they started parleying with the Germans, who were apparently under the delusion that the Northamptons would surrender. Consequently Captain Savage started to return when a rifle shot rang out and he fell dead shot through the back. His brother officer flung himself to the ground and managed to get back to our lines. Full of avenging anger, the Northamptons then charged at the point of the the bayonet, and with the King's Royal Rifles inflicted heavy losses and drove the enemy from the trenches." Captain John Ardkeen Savage, 1st Bn, Northamptonshire Regiment Born on 1 Sep 1883, the eldest son of Rev. Francis Forbes Savage, Vicar of Flushing , Falmouth and his wife, Ethel Margaret of Flushing Vicararage, Falmouth, Cornwall. Educated at Kelly College, Tavistock from Jan 1900 to Dec 1900 Commissioned as a 2nd Lieut. into the 3rd (Militia) Bn, West Riding Regt. in Oct 1899 and served with it in the South African War, 1900-1901. Took part in the operations in Cape Colony from Dec 1900 to Jun 1901 (Queen's Medal with four clasps.) Gazetted as 2nd Lieut, Royal Garrison Regt on 22 Nov 1902 Promoted to Lieut. on 30 May 1904 Transferred to the 1st Bn, Northamptons in India on 8 Jul 1905 Promoted Captain on 28 Mar 1912 Served with the West African Fronteir Force in Gambia and South Nigeria from June 1909 to Nov 1913 Went to France with the Battalion on 12 Aug 1914 Killed in action near Troyon during the Battle of the Aisne on 17 Sep 1914 A Sergeant of his company wrote: "You must understand sir, he was the not only my master but also a friend, whose loss I can never replace. I often try to think of him in his quarters at Blackdown and his mode of living, for, if ever God made a gentleman, the Hon. Jack, as we always called him, was one." The Bond of Sacrifice has a detailed, and rather lengthy rendition of his death. I imagine you already have it, but is not, let me know and I will send it to you. His brother Raymond Savage was in 1918, Extra ADC to HRH Duke of Connaught, KG and Military Secretary to Field Marshall Allenby, GCB. A photo of him is attached below. I will send you a larger version by email. David_Bluestein Posted 24 June , 2004 Share Posted 24 June , 2004 Dick Again my hats off to you Dick...You have done it again!!! This is FANTASTIC new material! A truly great addition to his lonely little Mons Star. I do have the 'Bond Of Sacrifice', and also have him shown in a couple other sources, however the material you have added, especially the soldier talking about him, is ALL new and gratefully received. You have made my day! David Happy in Canada

Patrick ODwyer Posted 24 June , 2004 Share Posted 24 June , 2004 Thank you for the offer - much appreciated. I would be grateful for anything on Lord Stalbridge and on Sparrow if he is an Hussar. I had head that R E Kimbell (page 136) was in this book but you do not list him - is he not there? There was also a R W Hewitt and E Nicolson from the area but they are probably not listed. Kind regards

Patrick: The Cpt Sparrow is from the Northamptons and is not a Hussar. There is a photo of Lord Stalbridge somewhere in the book, but I have gone through it three times and can't seem to find it. The list I made for this thread did not include all the photos in the book, just those of officers and men of the Northamptons. I will post shortly a list of the officers and men from other regiments who are also illustrated. There is a Lieut. E R Kimbell, RAF on page 136 and I have attached his photo below. RW Hewitt and E Nicolson do not appear to be listed. Regards. Dick Flory

Guest Simon Bull Posted 25 June , 2004 Share Posted 25 June , 2004 Dick, If you are not overwhelmed I would be interested in scans of pictures of the following: Colonel Curtis - resident in the twin villages the war memorial of which I am researching. Commanded 1/4th Northamptonshires. Unveiled War Memorial I am studying. Committed suicide in 1924 by throwing himself under train. Suicide said to have been caused in part by the effects upon him of war service. Lt E W Jacques, who is named on the War Memorial at Orlingbury, a neighbouring village, the War Memorial of which I have taken some interest in. Thanks. Kate Wills Posted 25 June , 2004 Share Posted 25 June , 2004 Joe, I know someone who is/was researching Carritt in relation to his research into the fallen of Portishead near Bristol. If you need his details please contact me. Carritt was a missionary in China before the war, based (if memory and ability to spell serve me well) at Tsingtao.
