Bardess Posted 15 January , 2011 Share Posted 15 January , 2011 Does the London Gazette cover all the Services regarding bravery awards? If so could a link be placed for a recipient of each Service please? I've been conducting a search for a specific place name and want to know if the Navy and RFC/RAF will be included. Bardess Posted 15 January , 2011 Author Share Posted 15 January , 2011 I'm searching the LG for an area and hope that not only the Army gives place names against their names. No-one specifically
Ron Clifton Posted 15 January , 2011 Share Posted 15 January , 2011 Hello Diane The LG does cover all services, but the location of awards is not usually given, at least for the lower awards (MC etc) and there are no citations for the MM etc. Ron
Bardess Posted 16 January , 2011 Author Share Posted 16 January , 2011 Thank you Ron. Not quite sure if a complete search can be done then. Ah well
Nigel Marshall Posted 16 January , 2011 Share Posted 16 January , 2011 Diane, do you mean the recipient's home town is sometimes given? I've seen this for army (including RFC) other ranks in entries for VC, DCM, & MM. Here is a typical page of Military Medal awards with the recipients' home towns given. http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/30573/supplements/3228 The gazette site seems to have gone down now! I'll have another look when it's working again to see if the other services are consistent with the Army entries. Cheers, Nigel
Bardess Posted 16 January , 2011 Author Share Posted 16 January , 2011 Yes, Nigel, that's exactly what I mean [should have explained it a little more ]
Nigel Marshall Posted 16 January , 2011 Share Posted 16 January , 2011 This link confirms that Army other ranks' residences were listed when they received foreign awards. http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/30498/supplements/1376. As for the award of the DCM, it appears from the few pages that I have looked at that when the recipients of the DCM are listed without citation their residence is also given. When listed with citation, however it seems the pattern changes so that the residence is not given. Also, when the recipeints of bars to the original medal are announced it appears that the residence is ommitted. Rough pattern in my mind seems to be that the recipient of a medal was granted only one mention of where he came from, although I am almost certain my theory will be too rudimentary and there will be exceptions. On to the VC now. This is a link to a perfect (for this purpose) VC gazette. It contains VC awards to officers and non-commissioned ranks as well as Empire forces alongside UK forces. http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/30471/supplements/722 It appears from this gazette supplement alone that officers do not have their residences listed, regardless of them being UK officers or officers of the Empire. UK other ranks do have their residences listed whereas Empire troops do not. That's just the Army though. I'll come back with the Royal Navy in a while. Nigel Marshall Posted 16 January , 2011 Share Posted 16 January , 2011 It doesn't look like the Naval or RAF awards gave residences when announced in the London Gazette. Cheers, Nigel

ForeignGong Posted 18 January , 2011 Share Posted 18 January , 2011 This link confirms that Army other ranks' residences were listed when they received foreign awards. http://www.london-ga...upplements/1376. I'll come back with the Royal Navy in a while. Cheers, Nigel Sorry Nigel Not all the OR's & NCO's who received foreign awards had their residences listed. Most do but the early 1915 & 16 awards rarely have residences listed & some 1917 awards do not. It appears that the 1915 to 17 were a bit of hit & miss. Nigel Marshall Posted 18 January , 2011 Share Posted 18 January , 2011 No problem, Peter. I was trying cover all eventualities without having time to ensure any depth to what I found. Thanks for clearing it up though. Cheers, Nigel
