I have just noticed that the National Archives haf the Officers Silver War Badge Lists available on Documentsonline {to the left of the normal search screen, under 'Army'.}. Each image comes as a set of about 7 pdf's covering a range of 40 odfficers numbers i.e. 1-40 or 200-239. The highest number is 500. Each batch of pdf's costs £3.50, which seems good value. Can someone explain what they mean by the Officers Numbers.

Alf,

I have the SWB List Off/602, it contains the details of 10 officers. So I believe that for example "officer list numbers 200-239" actually means that the download contains the SWB Lists Off/200 to Off/239. Each list containing the details of 10 officers and each download covering 40 officers. I'm not sure this is answering your question? Hope so.

Thanks John,

I think you meant to say 400 officers in each download. I assume that the reference Off/239, or similar, would appear on an Officer's medal card, followed by a number identifying him within the list.

Alf,

Yes 400, apologies, maths not my strong point

I have the MIC for 2nd Lt. V. M. Wollrauch which records SWB List Off/602. I got the list Off/602 from TNA last year and it records for each of 10 officers - Rank, Name, Corps (if any), Badge Number & Certificate Number, and Address. Dated and signed by approving officer.

Thanks again John,

I should add that the National Archives say the lists ar for 1917 to 1926, I think this may be an error for 1917 to 1920. Can anyone confirm this is correct.

I suspect the covering dates have been taken from WO 329 as a whole which does state 1917-1926 in the catalogue, however, WO 329/3247 there does have 1917-1920, so you might be right!

Alf/Archangel19,

It would be interesting to know if Officers had a sequence of numbers, different to ORs, stamped on the back of the badge. From your sample pages can you give an example of the numbers issued to Officers. Is there a pre-fix, for instance (apart from the usual letters such as B etc)?

This info may assist anyone in categorising such a badge number.

Thanks David.

Sotonmate,

I haven't actually downloaded any of these lists, since none of the Officers I am interested in were awarded the SWB. It would be interesting though to know of any additional identifying letters or numbers.

You are wasting your time and money if you plan to download the SWB lists to officers as for £20 you can buy Services Rendered: Nominal Roll for The Silver War Badge, Volume 1 - Officers of the British Army by Alan Stuart that gives all of Silver War Badges awarded to officers of the British Army indexed by number and by name with the same information given on the rolls. The numbers to officers are not sequential but rather are mixed with other ranks so that one can not tell by the number sequence whether the badge was awarded to an officer or OR.
