Bedfordshire shoulder title

Can anyone give me some idea why this man has this type of title?

I am guessing some type of temporary titles until the proper ones were available.

Thanks.

It's what is known as a "slip-on" title. It has a cloth loop behind, and slips on to the shoulder strap. In WW1 they often had white lettering and in WW2 black lettering.

Not sure about WW1, where the security was laxer, but in WW2 soldiers were supposed to remove the title in order to hide troop movements.

Hi Beppo

Thanks for that, I just thought it looked a bit big for a 'slip on'.

There seems to be quite an overhang.

Cheers.

There can be. A lot of WW1 badges etc were larger than in WW2.

Also, types of maufacture vary. I have more than one WW1 slip-on title on khaki coloured leather, rather than on cloth.
