rayg Posted 12 December , 2010 Share Posted 12 December , 2010 Starting in August of 1916 and again in March 1917 Manufacture Nationale d'Armes de Châtellerault (MAC) developed "night sights" for the as-issued front and rear sights, the modification consisted of placing a small amount of fluorescent radium in a small 1/8" deep rounded hole on the front sight facing the shooter and two on the back of the rear sight leaf , one on each side of the sight notch. Today, rifles rarely retain any trace of the radium, but the night sighted rifles command a premium to collectors as they are relatively uncommon". 4thGordons Posted 12 December , 2010 Share Posted 12 December , 2010 Interesting - I have not seen that before. The same idea is used on some modern handguns and shotguns (although I am fairly sure they do not use radium! I believe they use "titrium") Chris Here is a modern example for fitting to a pistol. off to check my Berthier!
gew98 Posted 18 December , 2010 Share Posted 18 December , 2010 Very nice. First set I've seen pictured. Read about them but it's nice to see it's not a rumor. I have a buddy wit a set of night sights for the M95 Mannlicher rifle.. but he won't cough 'em up !. Guess I'll have to suffer with my gew98 Nachtvisier sets.
