Amongst the medal groups I recently acquired on a trip to Ontario was a 1914-15 Star trio to 626 Pte.E.F.Hide, Royal Sussex Regt.

Because his service number is so low may I assume he was a regular who for whatever reasons didn't get shipped to France until after qualification dates for the 1914 star had expired?

I have ordered his MIC and medal roll entry, but was interested in any thoughts the Pals might have.

His number is minus its prefix, which itself indicates he had later service with another unit, as the Royal Sussex medal office, which handled the medals of men who served only with the regiment, always engraved the prefix.

His number is too low for a regular; in the Royal Sussex the regulars were up to 10000 - 11000 with an 'L' prefix by 1914.

It is likely it was a 'G', '4' or '5' prefix, which would indicate a New Army, 4th Battalion TF and 5th Battalion TF (Cinque Ports) respectively. It might also have been a 'GSSR' or 'LSSR' prefix which would have indicated a Special Reservist.

The date he went overseas will give some clue to his battalion; when you have those details post them here.

The On Line MiC shows later service with the Royal Engineers, with two further 6 figure numbers. It does not give a Prefix on his Sussex Regiment Number as Paul rightly suggested
