Medal valuations

I have a group of four WW1 medals on a pin: British / Victory / Territorial Force War Medal / Territorial Force Efficiency Medal, the ribbons are a little `worn` shall we say!., and the Territorial Force Efficiency medal has a bar across the ribbon with a crown symbol in the middle. All are named, with a three digit service number, and the Unit was the Shropshire Yeomanry. Where could I go to get a `fair` and `honest`, valuation. I believe the Territorial medal/s, may be scarce and possibly a bit valuable. I have been on other forums inviting any (provable) relations if they wanted them, but I had no replies. As I know very little about these things, I would appreciate any genuine advice, cheers. cresser

Hiya.

If you want a valuation & not a sale,go to http://www.southernmedals.co.uk/index.html & ask John for a valuation only.

Stipulate that you wont be selling them from the outset.

If selling,use ebay.

If not,try the medal year book & get a v rough idea.

Dave.

Hi Cresser,

I would say from my experience that such a group would have a price tag of something in the region of £500 to £600? But of course it is only worth what someone will pay for it and not being a Shropshire Yeomanry collector I can say no more than that!!

At least you now have a 'ball park' figure, but I have no doubt that others may choose to disagree with me!!

Hope this helps,

Robert

PS Of course this is assuming that the medals are in GVF or better condition.

I would err on the side that this is a conservative estimate; TFEMs to Yeomanry as singles fetch

premium prices, and the bar only enhances this. TFWMs are considerably scarce to Yeomanry (Harold

Williamson's 2-volume work has a list of totals to regiments) sometimes issued in single figures only. Plenty of research potentioal in them too. And you have the complete group. The only way of knowing would be, ultimately, to sell them! But I would think that £5-600 is just a baseline.. Don;t worry about the ribbons; modern ones for display are fine, but don't throw the originals away!

This is a very desirable group. The combination of TEM and TFWM makes it more so. The number of medals to the Shropshire Yeomanry is a little hard to count. I get about 1500, but there are a lot of other Yeomanry regiments that sent men to the Shropshire Light Infantry which appear in the count. National Archives gives 1200, but again there are cards where it isn't the original unit.

A single Efficiency GVR went last September for L200. I would think the earlier medal would fetch more, especially with a n additional service clasp. In 2006 a pair plus TFWM and silver war badge went for L330. Allowing for increases in medal prices over four years, plus something for group value, perhaps L600-700. If it were at auction, and there were two Yeomanry collectors interested, the sky could be the limit.

Wow!, A big THANK YOU, to everyone who replied, I really appreciate the help and advice you have all given me. You have all given me plenty to think about. One question more; would it be advisable to use a reputable auction house, ( I realise there would be a fee to pay ), in a specialist sale, or ebay?. Again, many thanks, cresser.

The major auction houses will cost you more, however, they may get you more. You could give e-bay a crack and see what comes off.

One final question - Do the medals have any link to your family? For if they do then don't.

Cheers Andy.

or make your post here and you'll get an pretty marketable honest offer from any number of tenthusiastic and knowlegable collectors:

http://www.britishmedalforum.com/

or enter it at www.bosleys.co.uk for their next auction - they get strong prices for medals and badges.
