27thBN Posted 30 November , 2010 Share Posted 30 November , 2010 Hi All i have a group i am starting research on, Lt Robert Francis Roland MC 1st Battalion Royal Innskilling Fusiliers i have his citation ... L.G. 4/10/1919 ‘On the 20th. October, 1918, when the situation near Driesch was not clear, he made a daring reconnaissance to ascertain the dispositions of the front line troops. During his reconnaissance the enemy made a determined counter-attack on the right company near Spriete. He immediately moved to that flank and greatly assisted the remaining officer of that company in repelling the attack by his coolness and example under very heavy fire..........He was a S SGT RAMC at first on his 14 star and bar and Lt on the pair at this stage have very little on him his MIC and LG entries, commissioned August 1917 ,can anybody please enlighten me on him or his unit .and also if he has a service record at the national archives thanks Tony

Desmond7 Posted 1 December , 2010 Share Posted 1 December , 2010 Have you any idea of his place of birth/residence? There is a Robert Roland (20) Church of Ireland, in Armagh on irish census 1911.
SteveE Posted 1 December , 2010 Share Posted 1 December , 2010 also if he has a service record at the national archives Tony No file apparent on the NA site which is unsurprising as the WO338 index shows him with a P/ prefixed number to indicate some later service. A quick search of the Gazette shows he transferred to the Reserve of Officers after the war until he reached the age limit of liability to recall and ceased to belong to the Reserve in 1934. A couple of Gazette issues for you...http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/issues/exact=R.+F.+Roland/start=1 Regards Steve
Esskay Posted 2 December , 2010 Share Posted 2 December , 2010 A tiny bit of (possibly) family information Irish Civil Registrations have a birth for a Robert Francis Roland - in the 3rd quarter of 1884 in the registration district of Lurgan (which I think is in the county of Armagh) There is also a marriage in the 4th quarter of 1911 in the district of Dublin South A tree on Ancestry shows a man of the same name born 24th Jun 1884 (Ireland) with parents Blayney Grier Roland and Susanna (nee Scott) Will see if anything else comes up Cheers Sue
Esskay Posted 2 December , 2010 Share Posted 2 December , 2010 This looks like the family in 1901 http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Armagh/Kernan/Ballinacor/1027835/ Robert isn't with the family in 1911 - but I'm not sure if the one Desmond7 found above is him as age is out a bit - and religion Cheers Sue
