CarylW Posted 28 November , 2010 Share Posted 28 November , 2010 Came across an old Yorkshire Post Evening News July 2nd 1918, while clearing out bookshelves and thought these 'In Memorium' notices may be of interest to those researching the men. Most of the heart rending messages seem to be for casualties of the first few days in the Battle of the Somme 1916 BRIERLEY- In loving memory of our dear nephew and cousin, Signaller Arthur Brierley, West Yorks (Leeds Rifles) Killed in action July 2nd 1916 "He lives with Christ in Paradise" - From Uncle Frank, Aunt Sarah and cousins, also Clifford (In France) BRIERLEY- In ever loving memory of our dear son and brother, Signaller A. Brierley, killed in action July 2nd 1916 "With aching hearts we shook his hand Tears glistened in our eyes We wished him luck but never thought It was his last goodbye - From his sorrowing parents and sister, also of his sister who died Jume 26 1918 BRIERLEY - In ever loving remembrance of my dear sweetheart, Signaller Arthur Brierley , West Yorks. Killed in action July 2nd 1916 "Though land and sea divide the spot where my loved one is sleeping Still, in my heart he is not forgot Though in our Saviour's keeping Not gone, dear sweetheart, only hidden A moment from my eyes Not lost, but only waiting For me in Paradise - From his ever loving Sweetheart Dorothy (at Cambridge) BRIERLEY - In proud and loving memory of my dear friend Signaller A. Cpl.G.W. Cockcroft, West Riding Field Ambulance, late 18 Askern-street Hunslet, killed in France July 1st 1916, "Deeply Mourned" - Mother and all FRANKLIN - In loving memory of my dear husband, Thomas Franklin, killed in action, 1st or 3rd of July 1916 -"His cheery ways and smiling face are pleasant to recall. He had a kindly word for each and died beloved ny all"- From his wife and little son HINDLE - In loving memory of our dear son and brother, Private Harry Merson, Leeds Rifles, died of wounds received in action, July 2nd 1916, in his 21st year, also brother of the above, Private Ernest Hindle, Royal West Surreys, (late K.O.Y.L.I.)in his nineteenth year, killed in action, July 22nd 1917 "The memory of dear ones live forever, may they rest in peace" - Mother, Father, Sister and brothers LIVERSIDGE - In loving remembrance of a dear son and brother, Second-Lieutenant A. A.Ryman, died of wounds July 2nd 1916 "Though death divides, sweet memories cling" - From his loving Mother, Sisters and Brothers, and Eliza ROBINSON - In loving memory of our dear son and brother, Private Harry Robinson, K.O.S.B. Regt., killed in action July 1st 1916 "Though death divides still memories cling" - From Mother, Father and Sisters WILDE- In loving memory of our dear nephew, Private Willie Wilde, killed in action July 3rd 1916 "One with thy saints, with one unbroken peace - From his aunts and uncles, Annie, Maggie, Edith, Thomas and Ted WALPOLE - In loving memory of Private Joe Walpole (West Yorks)Killed in action July 2nd 1916 "Days of sadness still come o'er us Bitter tears often flow Memory keeps our dear one near us Although he died two years ago" - From his loving mother and family WORTH - In loving memory of Private John William Worth, died of wounds in France July 2nd 1916 "In a far off foreign graveyard Where the trees, their branches wave Lies a loving son in a cold and silent grave Though he's gone he's not forgotten It's sweet to breathe his name, but all we have left to look at is his photo on the wall - From his Mother .....................
