25th Northumberland Fusiliers - 10/9/1917?

I'm trying to get an idea of this Ibstock man's service and circumstances of his death.

Name: TYERS

Initials: W B

Nationality: United Kingdom

Rank: Private

Regiment/Service: Northumberland Fusiliers

Unit Text: 25th (Tyneside Irish) Bn.

Age: 29

Date of Death: 10/09/1917

Service No: 36748

Additional information: Son of Walter and Mary Tyers, of Ibstock, husband of Eleanor Margaret Tyers, of 80, High St., Ibstock, Leicestershire.

Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead

Grave/Memorial Reference: I. E. 27.

Cemetery: HARGICOURT BRITISH CEMETERY

There are no service papers for "Walter Blakley Tyers"

SDGW has him as formerly 37462 Leicesters, which looks like an early 1917 recruit date. He may never have served with the Leicesters outside of the UK, and could have been transferred to the Tyneside Irish on arrival in France.

Does anyone have any information of a draft of men from the Leicesters in his number range? His DOD 10/9/1917 seems to be after the main action at Hagricourt, if someone has access to the relevant war diary, I'd appreciate some idea of what was going at the time.

Thanks,

Chris.

Hello.

Drafts after 1/7/16 to the 25th Battalion are numerous and come from a variety of battalions of the Army and continue until about January/February 1917. As regards my own interests with the West Yorkshire Regiment, for example, large drafts commencing about 25th July 1916 whilst the battalion are located at Estree-Cauchy, north-west of Arras, 121 Other Ranks. As regards the Leicesters, my data up to press does not contain drafts from the latter. A search of SDGW will provide you with some information.

Best wishes.

Chris.

36748 Pte Walter Blakely Tyers is one of two former Leicestershire Regt men transferred to the 25th Bn, Northumberland Fusiliers, his former number being 37642. The other being 36751 Pte Arthur Weston(formerly 37501), Leicestershire Regt. However the specific NF Medal Roll for these two doesn't mention from which Leicester Battalion they came, but the majority of those around these two are formerly Training Reserve men, some coming from the 88th T.R.B.,, and others from the A.S.C.

35548 Pte John Charles Bolam Thompson on the other hand came with a draft of former Durham Light Infantrymen, having formerly been 37954 Pte J.C.B.Thompson, 18th Bn, Durham L.I.. He seems to come from a group who enlisted around late 1915/mid-16.

43670 Pte Thomas Wilson on the other hand seems to have no previous regiment, so is possibly a direct conscription into the NF, and those surrounding him seem to have arrived in France sometime around June 1917.
