Graham Smith Posted 24 November , 2010 Share Posted 24 November , 2010 Well is this clip for real? If it's a genuine piece of film is just amazing
willy Posted 24 November , 2010 Share Posted 24 November , 2010 yes, although rehearsed and staged, many ww1 pilots starred in flying circus's after the war as a way to earn a living.
centurion Posted 24 November , 2010 Share Posted 24 November , 2010 Known as Barnstorming. For a fictional account see The Great Waldo Pepper. Stunts included air to air refuelling using cans and a funnel, swapping passengers, eating a meal on the wing (at a small table), climbing up/down a rope ladder from/into a speeding car - all without safety harness or parachute. I think there was even a wedding on a wing.
Andrew Smith Posted 25 November , 2010 Share Posted 25 November , 2010 I had the clip emailed to me a few weeks ago. It came with this text..... Gladys Ingles was a member of a barnstorming troupe called the 13 Black Cats in the 1920's. Ingles was a wing walker; in this film, she shows her fearlessness in a classic barnstorming routine to save an airplane that has lost one of its main wheels. Ingles is shown with a replacement wheel being strapped to her back and then off she goes as "Up She Goes," a duet from the era, provides the soundtrack. In the video, Ingles transfers herself from the rescue plane to the one without a main gear tire. She then expertly works herself down to the undercarriage only a few feet from a spinning prop. It's certainly a feat many mechanics wouldn't even try on the ground with the engine running. Regards, Andrew
