KevinBattle Posted 24 November , 2010 Share Posted 24 November , 2010 Hi, Kerran, that's an intriguing question. I see you live in New Zealand, so presumably you aren't able for some reason to get to Otaki yourself. I can only find one reference in the CWGC Debt of Honour for H M McFarlane, but he is recorded as being on the Tower Hill Memorial, not buried/cremated in Otaki. Name: McFARLANE, HECTOR MACDONALD. Initials: H M. Nationality:United Kingdom Rank: Trimmer. Regiment/Service: Mercantile Marine. UnitText: S.S. "Tuscania" (Glasgow) Age: 17. Date of Death: 05/02/1918 Additional information: Son of John MacDonald McFarlane andMary Walkinshaw Gilchrist McFarlane (nee Rhind), of 264, Parchment Rd.,Glasgow. Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead. Memorial: TOWER HILL MEMORIAL He was only 17 so he sure started a family early, if he is your GGfather!! My apologies for butting in, but his Name was similar to a crew member of the Hospital Ship HMHS Glenart Castle, about which there has been a long running thread!! Name: McFARLANE, HUMPHREY. Initials: H. Nationality: UnitedKingdom Rank: Second Engineer. Regiment/Service: Mercantile Marine. UnitText: "Glenart Castle" (Southampton). Age: 43. Date of Death: 26/02/1918 Additional information: Husband of Mrs. McFarlane, of 65,Rue End St., Greenock. Born at Greenock. Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead. Memorial: TOWER HILL MEMORIAL Can you provide a bit more information regarding your GGfather and how he came to be in Otaki?

Milner Posted 27 November , 2010 Share Posted 27 November , 2010 I checked the cemetery records and it says your great grandfather died in 1958, so he would not be listed on CWGC as he survived the war. Strangly the record says age 0, so are you sure this is him. You can check this with the link below. http://www.kapiticoast.govt.nz/Our-District/Our-Community/Cemeteries/ SURNAME FIRST NAMES PLOT CEMETERY BLOCK AREA AGE DATE OF PASSING MCFARLANE H M 23 SAA Cremation Wall - RSA Section 0 1958
Esskay Posted 27 November , 2010 Share Posted 27 November , 2010 NZ Historic BMD records show him as aged 67 when he died in 1958 and he is recorded there as Henry Maldren McFarlane If the cemetery records him as being commemorated on a cremation wall - there is presumably only going to be some sort of plaque rather than an actual grave Have you tried contacting the local RSA branch in Otaki http://www.otakirsa.co.nz/ Kerran has this earlier thread about him http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=155393&st=0 Cheers Sue
