I have found a photograph of a man in uniform with his wife and three children.

It has an address

J T Mason

8 Highfield Terrace

Low Leighton

New Mills

Nr Stockport.

It came for material connected with my grandad who was a Sherwood Forester.

I would like to reunite the picture with family of this man.

If its possible then only the power of the forum will do it

I can see four J T Mason in N&D -

John Thomas Mason 70890 can be discounted as his home address is Staffs. Killed in action with 9th Bn

1733 John T Mason - 1/6th Bn killed in action - Peak Dale, Stockport - could be this man. Peak Dale is about 10 miles from new Mills.

74022 John T Mason

83627 John T Mason

Also a 53rd Bn man 6/53717 - died.

If I was you, I'd write to the letters page of the Buxton Advertiser and the Stockport Express asking any family to contact you. Of course, with the passing of time, there may well be several grandchildren and great-grandchildren who contact you. How would you decide which one to reunite with the photo?

Possibly, you are looking at John Thomas Mason , birth registered at Hayfield (the district covering New Mills) in 1886 (although there's boys of the same name with births registered in Chapel-en-le-Frith in 1889 and Stockport in 1890). Listed on the 1901 Census, aged 14, and the son of John & Ann living New Mills. FreeBMD has a Hayfield listing for a marriage in 1910 of a John T Mason.

The New Mills Local History Society may also be worth a punt.

There's also a James T Mason in the Notts & Derby:-

Name: James T Mason

Regiment or Corps: Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment

Regimental Number: 93682

Unfortunately, Highfield Terrace only goes up to 7 in the 1911 census so it doesn't appear the family were living there then. There are two Johns living in Stockport - one born 1888 is single in 1911, the other is 34 with three children: two girls and a boy. Possible the family had enlarged by the time the photo was taken and the older children were away from home. Two James - one aged 25, married with a 7 month old son (so again potential) and the other is 23 and single. Of course, if they weren't living in Stockport in 1911, I'm barking up completely the wrong tree!
