bartmac118 Posted 21 November , 2010 Share Posted 21 November , 2010 Help needed in finding out which Battalion of the Cameron Highlanders my father served in during WW1, it's not stated on his Medal Card, Victory Medal nor info I obtained from RHQ The Highlanders. He was also transferred to R.E. but again no date given. I know he attested at Glasgow on 19th April 1915 but that is all. Any help much appreciated. John_Hartley Posted 21 November , 2010 Share Posted 21 November , 2010 it's not stated on his Medal Card, No - it isnt usually mentioned. The card is an index card for the medal rolls which will record the battalion (the codes and page numbers on the card refer). The rolls are at the National Archives and aren't available online. bartmac118 Posted 22 November , 2010 Author Share Posted 22 November , 2010 Thanks Gary and John: in the hope that someone can help his details are: 17890 Pte William McLellan(no "d" for some reason) Cameron Highlanders. (R.E. No: 359484) Thanks again, John
KevinBattle Posted 22 November , 2010 Share Posted 22 November , 2010 I don't know if this helps or confuses, but this man appears to have a close Service Number. Given your comment about McLellan no D, is there a connection? Name: McCLELLAND, ERNEST. Rank: Private Regiment/Service: Cameron Highlanders. Unit Text: 1st Bn. Age: 25. Date of Death: 24/11/1916. Service No: S/17892 Additional information: Son of Andrew and Mary McClelland,of Redbrae, Wigtown. Grave/Memorial Reference: IV. C. 3. Cemetery: DERNANCOURTCOMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION. If it's an indication, most of the closest 178xx numbers appear to be 1st Battalion.....
bartmac118 Posted 23 November , 2010 Author Share Posted 23 November , 2010 Hi Kevin, thanks for your reply, as you state, the closeness of the numbers may mean he was in the 1st Batt. I don't think your man was any relation to my father, he was born in Beith, and joined-up from Saltcoats. I know that my father played the bagpipes, but not sure if he enlisted as a piper, is there any way I can find this info? Thanks again for your reply.
