hi guys,

To verify researches on the men who were killed in the explosion of Bapaume town hall in the night of 25th-26th march 1917, i would need your help!

Two men from 57th Bn AIF are buried in Bapaume military cemetery, they were killed on the 25/03/1917 but i doubt they were killed in the explosion as i have sources not mentioning them.

coporal AH Timms died of wounds? 25/03/1917

coporal AJ Hanger 25/03/1917

two other men are of my concern in Bapaume communal cemetery

S lieutnant JR Kay 25th Bn AIF 27/03/1917

Coporal GL Olds 20th Bn AIF 27/03/1917

if you have any information

please contact me

kind regards

philippe

Hi Phillipe

According to their Service Records:

Cpl Ashleigh Harry TIMMS (2034) was wounded on the 24/3/1917 & DOW 25/3

Cpl Alfred John HANGER (4507) was wounded 21/3/1917 & DOW 25/3

2nd Lieut John Rober KAY was wounded on the 27/3/1917 & DOW the same day 27/3

Cpl George Norman OLDS (1054) was KIA 27/3/1917

So it would appear that none of them were killed or wounded in the Town Hall explosion.

Cheers, Frev

One of my Tour Guests said that they were Light Horse that were involved.

She asked me to take her to the front door of the Bapaume Town Hall(Mairie). There, she told me that her Grandfather was in the Light Horse and some of his cobbers volunteered to help the Deputy Mayor shift some crates around down in the cellar. Shortly after, a massive "whump" was heard and they ran down to confirm their suspicion. All were dead from a German booby trap.

She said she had read about it in her grandfathers diary.

Sorry, don't remember the name.

Regards, Peter

Phillippe,

there is nothing mentioned about Olds death other than being buried by Rev Rolland and a recipient of MM. His file is here.
