Dannemois Posted 21 November , 2010 Share Posted 21 November , 2010 Hi, I'm doing a bit of research of the WW1 enlisted service men who were residing in my local village of Brithdir, in the Rhymney Valley of South Wales. Could some one please explain the information (No 4 Supernumber7 – 5th Bn Welch Regt) on the Attestation sheet of Thomas Harry Ford. On another sheet (Application for Discharge) he was listed as being with (No 4 Co Glam N R)? It looks as if he had two numbers 3852, and 20656 new number. Unfortunately no other details; could anyone help with further details of this soldiers time in service. thanks in advance, Roy
clive_hughes Posted 21 November , 2010 Share Posted 21 November , 2010 Dannemois, Looks very similar to details I have found associated with RWF men who were in the National Reserve (ex-Territorials and the like). For "Supernumber" read "Supernumerary Company", and the initials NR are a bit of a giveaway. Curiously the RWF National Reservists also had typical TF 4-figure numbers in 1914 then swapped to numbers in a 20,000 block (even though this ran in parallel with the same numbers for the 14th Service Battalion) so this might also be a common NR feature? See Long,Long Trail under Reserves for a better explanation. They eventually ended up as members of the Royal Defence Corps. Hope this helps, LST_164
