Mick Simpson Posted 21 November , 2010 Share Posted 21 November , 2010 Hi All I am hoping for any additional WW1 service information on a 43886 Cpl JE Hudson 1st CDAC. (Joseph Edwin Born 17 Nov 1879) So far I have:- Pre war he served 12 years in the Coldstream Gds (I will write to the Gds Archives for this information), fought in the Boer War, Discharged in 1901. Joined Hull Police. Emigrated to Canada and worked as a cook on the dredgers on the Great Lakes. On the outbreak of war he enlisted in the Canadian Army with two options passed to me Possibly "Victoria rifles"? More likely 1st CDAC (For which I have located the war diaries). Post war he was on a Steam Trawler "Barbados" which struck a mine and sunk with all hands. There is a previous post on the Forum wich list him as part of the 10 man crew aged 40 and refers to an article from the Times giving the date of the sinking as "not seen since Nov 7" 1920 The News article I have on him:- THE LATE MR J E HUDSON. 127, Chiltern Street Hull who was the cook on board the s.t. Barbados. which has been given up as blown up by explosion. Mr Hudson did not leave Hull on the ill-fated trawler, but went out in a cutter, and boarded the vessel on Friday before the Sunday when the vessel is supposed to have been lost. He served in the South African war and when he came home he joined the Hull Police Force, which he had to leave owing to a weak chest. He went out to Canada where he joined the Canadian Forces at the outbreak of war. He went to France and was wounded. At the Armistice, on being demobilised he joined the trawlers. While in Canada deceased worked on the Dredgers. He leaves a widow, Son and daughter to mourne their loss. There is a picture to go with this article but I don't have access to a scanner at present. Also I have a couple of other photos of him in uniform which I will post when I get to a Scanner at some point. They do show him with Sgt Chevrons. I have seached Ancestry and the Nat Archives on line with no success yet. Any help appreciated Mick

Broznitsky Posted 27 November , 2010 Share Posted 27 November , 2010 I am hoping for any additional WW1 service information on a 43886 Cpl JE Hudson 1st CDAC. (Joseph Edwin Born 17 Nov 1879) Interesting biography so far. His number indicates 1st Division Ammunition Column. You can always order his complete service record package from LAC: http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/cef/001042-130-e.html#h Another alternative is a private researcher who will photograph each page in his file; much nicer to deal with digital images than photocopied pages, in my opinion. The price for digital photos is usually cheaper than photocopies, by the way. Peter in B.C.
Mick Simpson Posted 27 November , 2010 Author Share Posted 27 November , 2010 Peter Thanks very much for the additional info. I did realise I could order the rest of his file after I read the Canadian Archive site in greater detail. I will pass this on to my collegue who is his greatgrandson.
